As human beings, we need a sense of happiness, salary and a significance in our life. For most people, their sense of happiness and significance comes from the jobs they’re dedicated to on one hand and comes from their sense of existence from the process of helping others on the other hand. Work can help people establish a sense of value and indulge in their own existence. When AI (artifical intelligence arrive), will it affect people’s sense of happiness?
Ability of our human being is limited in nature. However, automation and artificial intelligence will certainly become a trend. When work done by most people are done by robots instead, people will have a sense of fear and worry about choosing what kind of job to do and will not be replaced by artificial intelligence.
When confronting with widespread of automation and losing jobs, people may worry that they cannot earn enough money to purchase products and to meet their own entertainment demand. People will think about how to find their sense of existence, significance and happiness which have been robbed by artificial intelligence. When AI can help human beings by taking place of their fellows, people will gradually lose their ability of showing empathy.
According to relevant psychological theory, this is just an upgraded requirement on self-fulfillment and self-realization. Just as the demand for recreation which is rigid, people will consider what on earth is the significance of existence of themselves when their rigid demands have been robbed. Philosopher Michel Pascal has stated in Meditations：human beings is just like a phragmite with the ability to think when confronting with the vast universe.
When our sense of happiness in life has been robbed by artificial intelligence and no significane is found, we human beings will be stuck into another crisis — how are we going to define ourselves. Just as Kevin Kelly revealed: we will be trapped into an identity crisis in the next decade or even the next century. We need artificial intelligence to tell us who we are and this is what makes us fear.
