Why Eileen Chang left her rich family?

When Eileen Chang was 17 in 1937. She came across her first choice to stay with her own mother who had came back from abroad after finishing her study. However, back to her father’s family, her stepmother just gave her a big slap on her face hearing her saying that she had gone to see her own mother. She fighted against her stepmother but finshed by severe beating by her own father. Later she was confined in a locked room by his father but finnaly she escaped away. She left her rich family for freedom.


Why Eileen Chang said that if you wanna fame you should win fame as early as possible?

After escaping away from her father’s family, Eileen Chang lived in an apartment rented by her own mother and aunt. However, she encounter bigger trouble later. As tuition fees and life expenses of Eileen Chang had affected life quality of her mother, she was cursed and blamed severely by her mother everyday. All her mother’s curse and blaming words made Eileen Chang very sad and guilty. She tried her best to save money meanwhile studied the hardest and always was the No. 1. In 1938, she was enrolled in London University in Britain ranking No. 1 in the remote area. Unfortunately, she had to be transferred to Hong Kong University due to Anti-Japanese War. She won scholarship in her college but her scholarship was finnally in vain as when she shared her scholarship with her mother, it had been lost in gambling by her mother. Her mother even persuaded her to marry as quickly as possible for not willing to burden her daughter’s tuition fees or life expenses. In 1941 when Eileen Chang was 21, she chose writing as her career rather than get married with others. At first, she wrote short passages but later she wrote novels and made them published. Her first novel was published in 1943 when she was only 23. In just two years, she had already well-know all over China and she said if you wanna fame you should win fame as early as possible!


Why Eileen Chang chose to marry an unfamous American old writer?

Even she had a period of sad marriage with Hu Lancheng before she moved to America, she was a woman with affection and righteousness. When she found their mutual affection have lost, she just left Hu with strong determination. After settling in America, Eileen Chang was still quite famous while Lai Ya, her second husband, was just an unfamous American old writer. She chose to marry Lai just because they mutually understood with each other very well. She chose to live a simple, quiet and stabe life.


In her testament, she only left her money to her aunt and a couple who had always helped her for a long time. Those who have ever been crude in her early life was also indifferent to her in her later life.
