When you are able to be mindful, this makes you feel something else as well. You begin to feel empathy. Instead of jumping down someone’s throat because they said something that upset you, you learn to observe and to understand where all of their views come from. You listen but you learn not to judge. Keeping your judgment to yourself and simply accepting people as they are, you are able to make more friendships on a positive basis.

There are several tips on practice being mindful with friendship.

1. Be loyal.

The first step to cultivating friendships is loyalty. You need to cultivate friendships in the same way that oen would cultivate a garden and loyalty is paramount. A garden that goes without watering will wither up and fade away, the same goes for a friendship that does not receive attention.

When you’re feeling beaten down by the world, nothing means more to you than your friends. Being loyal doesn’t mean that you have to have grand gestures. It simply means being willing to stand by your friends through both the bad and the good.

2. Be vulnerable

Vulnerability is an important factor to friendship. If you’re willing to show your friends your soft underbelly and admit that you do not know all the answers, you allow them to show up for you. You can give your friends a great gift when you allow them to see your vulnerability. You’re showing them that it is safe for them to trust you with their weakness. Your friends know that they are safe and you won’t judge them for making mistakes.

3. Allow your friends to express their emotions freely

Actually bad things happen in life. People may die and get divorced, have miscarriages, go through break ups, get laid off from work, lose pets and the list goes on.

Life can sometimes knock us down and leave us breathless. It can scare the wits out of us and make us want to hid in the corner and bawl our eyes out. It can be unfair and piss us off to no end. The best gift that your friends have given to you when you’re struggling is the space to experience your emotions fully. You shall be grateful if you have some friends who will sit on the phone with you and allow you to cry without being threatened by your feelings. By simply listening and allowing, they’re showing up for you in a very powerful way.

There are people that you want in your life rather than those who inflict themselves on you. You learn to differentiate between those people who make valuable friends and those who take all your energy away. You can give more to those who are valuable to you and thus make friendships much more solid. These are people that you can depend upon and when you are depressed, the best thing that you can do is make those friendships count for something.
