So many of us are going about are lives without knowing what we want from it. You might think to yourself, “I just want to be happy.” But you’re not, and there can be a number of reasons behind it. Being happy can be as easy as making a conscious choice. But sometimes it requires you to make certain lifestyle changes. In this passage several key tips to find happiness are given: quit nagging, be a person of action, challenge and novelty.

Quit nagging

Many of us trick ourselves into believing that even though our nagging doesn’t get much work done, if we stop doing it, the work will stop altogether. That is utterly false. Subtle hints and appreciation work much better at convincing people to finish the work. And in the end, don’t forget that you’re not the only one who gets to set the assignments. If, let’s say, your wife cannot do something at the moment, or doesn’t want to, go on and do it yourself. Don’t get angry about it. It will escalate into an unnecessary argument. I once asked my daughter if I could clean her room. I respected that it was her space but it was out of control. I even paid for her to go to the cinema while I did it. She agreed and the transformation that she came home to was worth all the efforts. Nagging anyone is negative and will make you feel even worse than you do now. Just do it and help people to appreciate you. Can you think of anyone that nags you that you feel good about? Chances are that all you feel toward people like this is negativity and that’s just how they feel about your nagging.

Be a Person of Action

Some people love to preach that genetics play a big role in your temperament. They say that you are either born a happy person or not. And while genetics can affect your personality to a certain extent, it is not necessarily true to claim that genetics is all is at work. A lot of your happiness is still in your own control. Take time and reflect upon life. Act towards making conscious choices towards being happier. In fact, if you care about others as much as you think you do, think about what your unhappines is doing to them. It makes you a very negative person to be with and misery loves company. It’s far better that people think of you as positive because negative people bring others down to their level and that’s not always the best thing to do. If you have a good positive friend that you can mix with, do so, but don’t expect him/her to continueally adapt to your negative way of thinking. Adapt to theirs because it’s a healthier way to go.

Challenge and Novelty

Surprise stimulates your brain. Whenever you are faced with an unexpected situation, you can either deal with it gracefully, or you can flip out and mess everything up. In the former case, you feel a lot of satisfaction, and you gain a sense of control. This is why people who like to try new things, like learning a new game or travelling to new places, are usually happier than the average person. There is no shame in failure if you don’t make it out to be that way. Learn to have fun in everything without the fear of the outcome.

I took on one game on the iPad and believe it or not was competing with a friend who was 70! Each of us were within our own homes, but we encouraged each other to get to the next level. Instead of being fiercely competitive, we simply explained to each other how to get there and it formed a great alliance between me and her. Try something new because you may find that you fill hours with joy instead of self-reflection in a negative manner. This game required balance and it was a really good game. Another one that I downloaded was a brain-teaser and every day, I had to do a set of exercises that showed my brainpower for the day. It was sometimes hard, but most of the time I found it to be great fun. Word games are also good fun and even if that means doing a crossword, at least you are using your mind to increase your vocabulary and that’s positive stuff.
