Will You Treat the Blues?

When we’re sad, it is typical to go out and “treat” yourself. We are told that this makes us feel better, but that is not always the case. You might buy an expensive pair of jeans and then later regret it, deeming it unecessary, because your finances were already tight. You might end up drinking a lot of wine and then later feeling guilty about it. Or you might have some cigarettes and beat yourself up about it later because “Dammit, I had quit it for good the last time!” You need to be mindful of what things you choose as these “treats”. Some of them are good for you, some are really not and you need to avoid them.

Treats to me used to come from a chocolate box but what you are doing is feeding yourself treats. Mental treats are every bit as good and sometimes even better. I threw away all the comfort foods because they were not helping in the slightest and gave myself certain targets of things that I needed to do within my day. Each time I achieved one of the goals, I treated myself, but this time it was to entertainment.

I love music and I would simply veg out, put the earphones on and absorb music so it cut everything else out. It was wonderful. For you, it may be a favorite TV show or a bath in bubble bath. Whatever it is, earn it and then treat yourself to it, but make sure that what you choose is a true treat that actually makes you feel better. Eating doesn’t because at the end of the day, you have to deal with the guilt that comes with it. Here are a few suggestions of treats which are healthy and which will make you feel better:

Try a new hair product to make yoru hair shine.

Have a bubble bath with candles lit around the bath.

Try out a new nail polish in an outlandish color.

Try a trip to the beauty parlor.

Try a new hairdo.

Treat yourself to a phone call with a friend and catch up on gossip.

The point is that if you feel that you have deserved a treat, then give yourself one. In summer, I tended to treat myself with fresh fruit. Although it is high in sugar content, it gave me a taste of the season that filled me with a new enthusiasm. There is nothing like fresh peaches to make you feel good.
