When you first started a relationship with your spouse or partner you probably spent a lot of time together was new. You wanted to learn as much about your significant other as you could. You wanted to hold hand, experience the world with them and receive attention from them, if you couldn't see each other in person (you could talk on the phone, text, or Skype partner or spouse was the most important person in your world at the time. During that crucial stage of relationship, you discovered what attracted you to your partner, and you discovered all of the reasons why you wanted them in your life and by doing so, you fell in love with your significant other.

Back then your spouse or partner was a priority. The reason why your relationship might be under stress is because other things have taken priority. Some of these might be situations beyond your control. You both could have full-time jobs that require a lot of attention. You may have children, pets, or other family members that require constant monitoring or care. However, it’s also possible that you have let superficial things come between you and your spouse or partner. It could be completely harmless, maybe you love your weekly poker nights, or you work out at the gym every day for a long time. Whatever it might be, you and your partner are no longer a top priority, and that's a problem.

You have to find a way to make your significant other the number one aspect of your life. You fell in love and made a commitment to each other. You must continue to prove that your partner or spouse is important to you. This can be achieved easily. When you make time for your partner as well as let them know what they mean to you, it will be clear to them that you see them as a priority. Sometimes it requires compromise. While you want your spouse or partner to be happy, your wellbeing also matters. You can show them how important they are or how much you love them and not have to give up everything in your life. You can have your poker night but also make sure that you make yourself more available to your partner on the nights that you are home. If exercising and keeping fit is something that makes you feel whole, there's no need to give it up. Maybe cut down to fewer days or don't stay as long as you currently do. If your significant other sees that you are attempting to make them a priority, they will want to do the same for you.

You can still be attentive to your spouse or partner without having to be negligent to other responsibilities. Taking care of your family is equally as irnportant as your spouse or partner. However, someday your family will grow and begin lives of their own and when the dust settles you still want to be in love with your significant other, right? Being a great parent is wonderful and something that you can both bond over, but at the end of the day make sure that you still make time for each other. Be proud of who you are if you have little ones who depend on you, just don't forget where you came from. Someday you’ll be glad that you found the passion in your relationship even when it matured and changed into more than just each other.

Do you have a demanding job? Do you find it hard to disengage and not take it home with you? Remember that the best way to balance everything in life is to live in moderation. While it's important to have a career and to be the best employee that you can be, do you want to look back your life and have regrets? Work hard but find time to take a break. Even if it's only for a few hours a day, make that your time to be with your spouse. Talk about anything but your job. Ignore your phone and emails. It will be a stress release for you, but it will also help your spouse or partner feel validated and that they are the most important thing in your life. Make sure that you don't “bring work home” with you unless you absolutely have to and if there are times that you don’t have a choice but to stay late or focus on your job at home, find ways to make it up to your partner when you do finally get a break. Use some of that paycheck on something fun for the both of you!

As with many aspects of keeping your relationship strong, if your partner becomes a priority you can remember why they are worth making compromises for. They see the effort that you are making, and it causes them to want to better the relationship as well. If you are both working hard to please the other, it will be easy to fall in love again. If you are both the most important thing in each other's life, it will be hard to find fault in each other.
